For twenty years, "getting found online" meant ranking on Google's first page. In 2026 that is only half the game. A growing share of buyers now ask ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews questions like "who is the best digital marketing agency in Bhubaneswar?" — and act on whatever those tools recommend. If your business is not part of that answer, you are invisible to a fast-growing audience.
This is where Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) — sometimes called Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) — comes in. Here is how it works and how to win at it.
What is AEO, and how is it different from SEO?
SEO optimises to rank a page. AEO optimises to become the answer. Instead of competing for a click, you are competing to be the source an AI model quotes, cites or recommends when it composes a reply. The good news: the two overlap heavily. Most AI engines still read the public web, so strong SEO fundamentals feed your AEO.
1. Write in a question-and-answer structure
Language models extract answers most easily when your content mirrors how people ask. Use real questions as headings (H2/H3) and follow each with a crisp, self-contained answer in the first two sentences. Add the detail afterwards. This "answer-first" pattern is exactly what gets pulled into AI Overviews and featured snippets.
2. Make your entity unmistakable
AI engines think in entities — people, brands, places — not just keywords. Help them understand who you are:
- Use the same business name, address and phone number everywhere (website, Google Business Profile, directories).
- Publish a clear "About" page that states what you do, who you serve and where.
- Claim and complete your Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and industry directory listings.
3. Add structured data (schema markup)
Schema is machine-readable context. Organization, LocalBusiness, FAQPage, Article and Product schema all help engines parse and trust your content. Every article on this blog, for example, ships with Article and FAQ schema — which is part of why it can be quoted directly.
4. Earn third-party mentions
AI models weigh consensus. If several independent sites, reviews and directories describe your business consistently, an engine is far more likely to recommend you confidently. Reviews, guest articles, PR and genuine backlinks all build this trust signal.
5. Keep the fundamentals strong
Fast, mobile-friendly, well-structured pages still win. If a human and a crawler can both understand your page in seconds, so can an AI model. Speed, clean HTML and logical headings are not optional.
The businesses that win AI search are not gaming an algorithm — they are the clearest, most trustworthy answer to a real question. Optimise for clarity and credibility, and the engines follow.
AEO is still early, which is precisely why it is an opportunity. The brands that structure their expertise now will be the default recommendation when your competitors are still wondering why their traffic is sliding.
